Update:I now own four of these panels and I think they're awesome. I hang them from wire racks using the supplied clips and place my plants directly under them. I then place a muffin fan above each and that keeps the panels and driver nice and cool. I wouldn't necessarily run them without the added cooling because I think they get warm enough that I'm not comfortable potentially aging the diodes any more than necessary. I haven't tried adding a heatsink above the four corners of the panels yet because the fans are doing a great job but that's an option that I had considered. Also I'm not a huge fan of having to use a screw driver to dim the panel but once I set it I forget it. At least the panels can be dimmed somewhat so that I can dial in the light intensity in a manner other than adjusting the distance from the light to the plants.Original:Honestly I haven't grown anything under this panel yet since I've had it for less than a day. I intend to use it as supplemental lighting for some of my sun loving indoor plants. But, I don't intend to use it at full power until I add some cooling. In several of the provided images you'll see that I unmounted the power supply from the board. I did this mainly to measure temperature across the entire surface so that I could understand how hot it gets. I also wanted to gain access to the output current adjustment potentiometer on the backside of the MEANWELL driver (XLG-100-H-A) so that I could dim the light. The socket head cap screws require a 3mm allen wrench to remove.I found that I could reduce the light output, as measured with a lux app on my phone, by roughly 57%. It isn't possible to smoothly control the light intensity down to zero but there is some appreciable adjustment possible. On the flipside there is a point where increasing the current significantly beyond the design setpoint causes the driver to cut out. I likely caused it to trigger some designed circuit protection - probably not great for my diodes but thank goodness for current limiting. There is a significant margin above 100W such that I don't think the light would ever cut out as configured from the factory.I've attached several interesting pics, some generated from the actual device and some related to its characteristics based on what I could find of its design. Most grow light manufacturers use 3000K temp LEDs whereas this one used 3500K. What effect this has on plants I do not know other than there is more green/blue energy being put out and less red from the majority of the integrated LEDs. There are a significant number of other LEDs intended to boost red/NIR output which should benefit most plants. The main selling point of this light for me was the 1% UVA included in the spectrum. One pic shows the energized diode array. Again with the LUX meter I took measurements, far enough away from the panel to allow beam angle to do its thing, that proved to me that light intensity is well distributed across the illuminated surface. Yes there are hot spots if you're somewhere under about eight inches from the array but by twelve inches light is well distributed. This is a major selling point for me. I've had plant leaves turn red under some of my other grow lights simply because I had them centered on the light and not at an outer edge. Sunburn, ouch. I'm not buying the max PPFD other manufactures use in their marketing as a sign of superiority. As for hot spots on the light itself I took thermal images of the backside of the panel at both 60W and 100W as measured at the wall. I only let the light stabilize for about 3 minutes so I'm sure temperatures would have climbed another few degrees - maybe. Regardless, I think this is useful information for anyone interested in purchasing the light. It tells me that it could definitely benefit from some intentional cooling. My ambient temperature was roughly 74 degrees in the room.I'm very excited to use this light. Do I think the choice of 3500K LEDs is optimal? I don't know. Do I think that all of the generated spectrum is useful to plants? No. Do I think this performs worse than other lights with similar design? Not much, if at all. Do I think it'll hugely benefit my plants at a time when unfiltered sunlight isn't available? Absolutely, yes!
